Sixty-five percent in the polls say an increase in foreign travelers is good for the Japanese economy

The latest Cabinet Office’s opinion polls 2015 on a tourism-oriented nation show that 93.4% of all respondents realize an increase in foreign travelers in Japan. About effects from an increase in foreign travelers, the top two answers are ‘help Japan increase tourism consumption and revitalize the economy (65.4%)’ and ‘contribute to revitalization of local economies (50.5%).’

In the last polls in 2008, the top two answers were ‘some measures are needed for security (51.8%)’ and ‘good for international exchanges and mutual understandings (50.7%).’ The difference between the top two answers in 2015 and 2008 is likely to represent that expectation to revitalization of the economy by expansion of the inbound travel market has been rising in Japan.

The polls also ask about Japan Tourism Agency. As a result, the ratio of ‘know the name and its mission’ is 16.2% (10.8% in the last polls), and the ratio of ‘have heard the name, but don’t know its mission’ was 40% (25% in the last polls). On the contrary, the ratio of ‘don’t know the name and its mission’ still reaches 43.9% (64.1% in the last polls), even though the agency formed seven years ago under the Japanese government’s initiative toward a tourism-oriented nation.
