The most Japanese have particular overseas travel plans in the past four years - AB-ROAD survey

The AB-ROAD Research Center’s overseas travel survey 2016, which targeted 18 years old or higher who experienced overseas travel in 2015, finds that the most want-to-go destination in 2016 was Taiwan, getting ahead of Oahu Island, Hawaii. The third was Australia, followed by Korea and neighbor islands of Hawaii.

According to the survey results, the ratio of respondents who already went abroad in this year rose by 1.4 points year on year to 13.7%, and the ratio of those who have plans to go abroad in 2016 by 3.2 points to 38.8%. The ratios were the highest in the past four years.

The most want-to-go destination in the future was Italy, followed by Spain and France. On the screening survey, the most want-to-go destination among inexperienced overseas travelers was still Hawaii (43.1%), much higher than 2nd France (37%).

The overseas travel rate in 2015 was 14.9%, almost the same as 14.8% in 2014, and the ratios of leisure travel (85.2%) and of heavy experienced overseas travelers with 10 or more times a year (57.9%) in 2015 were also unchanged from the previous year. The most popular leisure destination in 2015 was Taiwan, followed by Oahu Island and Korea, and the high growth rate was found in Southeast Asia, particularly Singapore.

The highest satisfaction was found in Thailand (expect beach resorts), raising its ranking from 8th in 2014, followed by Canada, Australia, Western Europe and Germany. In detail, Australia raised its ranking from 17th last year to 1st for sightseeing, and Germany from 12th last year to 1st for shopping. For security and health, Northern Europe’s ranking was up to the top from 8th last year.

By travel companion, Oahu Island was the most popular destination for families with children, unmarried couples and married couples, and Taiwan for families with parents and friends. For travel alone, Thailand (except beach resorts) was preferred most.
