Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total number of guest nights in Japan were up 0.4% year on year to 47.32 million in July 2019 (the secondary report).
The total consisted of 37.74 million Japanese guest nights (-0.8%) and 9.58 international visitors’ guest nights (+5.1%), which were record-high for July.
For August 2019, the first report says that the total was down 1.4% to 58.86 million guest nights.
The room occupancy rate was up 1.1 points to 62.9% as a whole in July 2019, and the highest rate was seen in city hotel with 80.6%. By prefecture, the highest rate was found in Tokyo and Osaka with 79.6% each, and the room occupancy rate of resort hotel in Osaka reached 94.3%.
In the international visitor market, guest nights of visitors from China, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong accounted for 67.2% of the total. Guest nights of Chinese visitors were up 21.5% to 2.97 million, while guest nights of South Korean visitors were down 10.8% to 895,400.
