Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in February 2024 was up 7.1% to 2,788,000 compared to the same month of 2019, which were record-high ever on a single month basis after the pandemic.
The largest source market continued to be South Korea with 818,500 visitors (up 14.3% over 2019), followed by Taiwan with 502,200 visitors (up 25.6%), China with 459,400 (down 36.5%), Hong Kong with 205,900 visitors (up 14.8%) and U.S. with 148,700 visitors (up 60.5%).
Visitors from 19 out of 23 core markets were record-high for February, such as Philippines with 65,200 visitors (up 85.4%) or Malaysia with 60,200 visitors (up 64.2%), and visitors from Taiwan and Vietnam (up 52.6% to 60,100 visitors) were record-high on a single month basis.
According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in February 2024 recovered to a 6.5% decrease (18,324 flights), and available seats to a 4.6% reduction (4.3 million seats) compared to February 2019.
Haneda handled 29.1% more flights (4,184) and 23.0% more available seats (1,020,924) than February 2019. Kansai recovered to a 14.9 decrease in flights (4,652) and to a 9.9% decrease in available seats (1,050,364).
