International visitors to Japan in January 2019 were up 7.5% to 2.69 million, record-high for January

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that the number of international visitors to Japan in January 2019 was up 7.5% year on year to 2,689,400, which were record-high for January.

Visitors from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, India, U.S., France, Germany, Russia and Spain were record-high for January. 

Top market was South Korea with 779,400 (-3.0%), followed by China with 754,400 (+19.3%), Taiwan with 387,500 (+10.5%) and Hong Kong with 154,300 (-3.9%), all of which accounted for 77.2% of the total.

Visitors from China and Taiwan saw double-digit growths because of more demands in late January just before the Chinese New Year holiday period began in early February this year, according to JNTO. The Australian market was especially boosted by skiing travelers, as the monthly number was up 16% to 811,000. The U.S. market also grew with higher cruise travel demand, seeing a 12.2% increase.
