Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in July 2024 reached record-high 3,292,500 on a single month basis, increasing by 10.1% compared to the same month of 2019. The total for the first seven months of 2024 was up 7.4 % to record-high 21,069,900, about 8 million more than July last year.
The largest source market was China with 776,500 visitors (down 26.1% over 2019), followed by South Korea with 757,700 (up 34.9%), Taiwan with 571,700 visitors (up 24.5%), Hong Kong with 279,100 visitors (up 28.7%). U.S. with 251,200 visitors (up 60.1%). The China market was boosted by an increase in direct fights, an increase in cruises and school holidays, according to JNTO.
Visitors from 19 out of 23 core source markets were record-high for July, such as South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia with 29,600 visitors or Canada with 48,200 visitors. Visitors from Hong Kong and Mexico were record-high on a single month basis.
According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in July 2024 decreased by 6.5% to 20,956 and available seats by 5.2% to 4,898,453 compared to July 2019.
Haneda handled 32.2% more flights (4,738) and 26.0% more available seats (1,171,103) than July 2019. Fukuoka also increased flights by 10.7% to 1,940 and available seats by 13.3 % to 409,063.
