The travel website ranking in terms of unique users in 2017, jointly surveyed by Japan Travel and Tourism Association and the online marketing analysis service provider Values, shows that jalan.net was visited by the most unique users in 2017, followed by Rakuten Travel, on both PC and smart phone. The 3rd place was Trip Advisor on PC and RETRIP on smart phone.
Jalan.net had 35.4 million unique users on PC (-4.8%) and 37.2 million unique users on smart phone (+11.4%). Unique users on PC reduced on the Japan-based websites among those in the upper rankings, however increased on the foreign-based websites, such as Booking.com, TripAdvisor, Expedia or Trivago. It is noteworthy that the Japan-based travel information media ‘icotto’ increased its unique users on smart phone by 262.2% year on year, even though it does not have a booking system on smart phone.

Meanwhile, the top website with the most organic searches (combined PC and smart phone) was TripAdvisor with 7.22 million unique users (+67.9%), followed by Jalan.net with 7.21 million (+58.8%) and RETRIP with 6.1 million (-6.8%).
The survey also finds that the top prefectural official tourist information site was predominantly ‘GO TOKYO’ with 1.52 million unique users on PC and 1.33 million unique users on smart phone. Ranked 2nd on PC and 4th on smart phone, ‘OSAKA-INFO’ successfully increased unique users because the site effectively used SNS apps, like Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, according to Values.
