Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) performed survey on foreign travelers’ movements by using location information on their mobile phones to grasp movement trends and potential needs of FIT. The survey results will be used to create new tour routes or attractive tourist sites.
Foreign travelers’ terminals connecting with NTT docomo network in nationwide Japan were subject to the survey, which was conducted in the same manner as ‘Mobile Space Statistics’ by docomo Insight Marketing.
The survey was conducted in ten wards of Tokyo, 20 cities outside of Tokyo including Yokohama, Hakone and Nagoya and ten leisure areas including Aso in Kyushu and Niseko in Hokkaido in the period from September 1 to 7 2014.
In Chuo Ward including Tokyo Station, Akihabara and Hibiya Park, for instance, the peak time for foreign travelers was daytime on weekdays, and they stayed overnight in other areas. The most foreign travelers in Chuo Ward were those from China, followed by U.S.A. and Taiwan.
In Osaka City, the survey finds that foreign travelers increased from midnight to early morning on both weekdays and weekend, which represents that Osaka is the city with high overnight demands. The most foreign travelers were those from Korea, followed by Taiwan and China.
