JTB has forecasted that a total of Japanese travelers in this summer holiday season (July 15 to August 31 2023) is expected to increase by 17.8% year on year or decrease by 3.3% compared to 2019 to 73.7 million.
Domestic travelers are estimated at 72.5 million, 16.9% more than a year ago or 0.1% more than 2019. Spending in domestic travelers may total 2.9 trillion JPY, 26.4% more than a year ago or 9.7% more than 2019, and the average expenditure a traveler is estimated at 40,000 JPY, 8.1% more than a year ago or 9.6% more than 2019.
The sentiment survey finds that the ratio of people who do not reduce expenditure on travel or hobby is up 2.1 points year on year to 27.8%, while the ratio of people who reduce expenditure on travel or hobby is down 6.8 points to 30.2%.
The most popular destination in Japan is Kanto (18.3%), followed by Hokkaido (12.5%), Kinki (12.3%), Koshinetsu (10.8%) and Tohoku (10.1%).
Major purposes are ‘staying with family ‘(10.9%), ‘homecoming visit’ (10%) and ‘relaxing in onsen’ (9.8%).
The most-preferred traveling length is two nights (36.2%), followed by one night (32.6%) and three nights (17.9%).

Outbound travelers is expected to double
JTB has forecasted that Japanese outbound travelers during the period is expected to increase by 114.3% year on year to 1.2 million, which remains a 60.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2019. The total expenditure is estimated at 277.2 billion JPY, 60.6% less than 2019, and the average expenditure a traveler at 231,000 JPY, 0.4% less than 2019.
The most-preferred traveling length is three nights (26.6%), followed by two nights (20.1%) and one night (11.6%).
The most popular destination is South Korea (19.1%), followed by Taiwan (16.1%) and Hawaii (12.6%). Among JTB products, short-haul destinations, such as Guam, Singapore or other Asia, have been sold well.
The sentiment survey finds that security and economic uncertainties still discourage Japanese people to go abroad, such as ‘I don’t want to go abroad for security and health reasons’ (11.6%), ‘I don’t want to go abroad because of complicated immigration’ (10.6%) or ‘I want to go abroad, but I can’t for an economic reason’ (9.8%).
