Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that the number of Japanese overseas travelers was up 22.8% year on year, reaching 1,666,500 in April 2019, approximately 300,000 more travelers than a year earlier.
The growth of 20% or higher was seen for the first time since May 2012 (up 24.2% to 1,431,204), when the positive rebound from the East Japan Great Earthquake a year ago was seen. Also, the Golden Week period with up to 10 consecutive holidays from late April to early May stimulated the outbound travel market.
The total for the first four months of 2019 was up 10.1% to 6,583,400.
