The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics in 2016 finds that Japan received 445,200 visitors from Australia (+18.4%), 1,422,700 from U.S. (+20.3%) and 292,500 from U.K. (+13.2%). Visitors from all of the three markets broke the previous annual records.

In December 2016 only, Japan received 51,500 visitors from Australia (+4.3%), 105,000 from U.S. (+16.8%) and 20,800 from U.K. (+7.2%).

In Australia, the market was boosted by extension of the air network, higher popularity of cruise travel and positive promotion campaigns. Public-private promotional efforts for Japan were effective in U.S. It was noteworthy that Joanna Lumley’s Japan, the documentary TV program, was a good opportunity to appeal Japan.
