The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics in 2016 finds that Japan received 901,400 visitors from Thailand (+13.1%), 361,800 from Singapore (+17.2%), 394,200 from Malaysia (+29.1%) and 271,000 from Indonesia (+32.1%). Visitors from all of the markets broke the previous annual records, and visitors from Thailand broke the previous records every month in 2016.

In December 2016 only, Japan received 96,400 visitors from Thailand (+3.1%), 75,900 from Singapore (+13/3%), 63,300 from Malaysia (+25.9%) and 40,900 from Indonesia (+39.5%).

According to the JNTO’s analysis, FIT and regular travelers for Japan increased through 2016 in Thailand, and the inbound travel market from Singapore was boosted by promotional campaigns and celebration events for the 50th anniversary of Japan-Singapore diplomatic partnership. For Malaysia, the seasonal advertising campaigns and promotion programs by airlines were effective, and promotion campaigns targeting school holidays and post-Ramadan holidays successfully stimulated the market.
