Year-on-year comparison of visitors to Japan from four Southeast Asian markets in March 2017

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics for March 2017 finds that Japan received 111,500 visitors from Thailand (+11.8%), 33,800 from Singapore (+2.5%), 43,700 from Malaysia (+14.3%) and 36,000 from Indonesia (+34.5%). Visitors from all of the markets broke the previous March records, and visitors from Thailand exceeded 100,000 for the first time for March.

The table below shows changes of visitors from the four markets in the last 12 months:

According to the JNTO’s analysis, the Thai market was boosted by an increase in air capacity and promotion campaigns through tourism events and consumer campaigns. In Singapore, promotions for cherry blossom and joint campaigns with major OTA particularly worked. In Malaysia, family travelers especially increased due to school holidays in late March. In Indonesia, lower air ticket prices, promotion campaigns and incentive demands were positive factors.
