The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics in September 2015 finds that visitors to Japan increased by 99.6% year over year to 491,200 from China, 37.2% to 302,900 from Taiwan, 38.6% to 301,700 from Korea and 64.9% to 115,200 from Hong Kong. All of the monthly results were record-high for September.
Year-to-date results of visitors from China, Hong Kong and Korea already exceeded the annual results in 2014, and visitors from China particularly exceeded the last year’s result of 2,409,000 as of July 2015.
The following table shows changes of visitors from the four markets in the last 12 months:
In September 2015, 50 cruise ships stopped by Japan, and also three holiday sequences encouraged more Chinese travelers to visit Japan.
For the Korean market, the promotional campaign targeting young travelers was a good effect for an increase in travelers to Japan. JNTO expects that an increase in LCC services may boost the market even after October.
The Taiwan market was boosted especially by about 20,000 cruise travelers and an increase in flights for Japan. Products for Japan were diversified, including a Japan tour by the automobile company of Taiwan.
Long holidays and an increase in flights contributed to expansion of the Hong Kong market, and also media exposures of autumn leaves in tie-up with travel companies boosted the market in late September.
