43 Japanese major travel companies still struggled with a 27% decrease in sales in June 2024 over 2019

Japan Tourism Agency announced that sales of 43 major travel companies in June 2024 were up 2.7% year on year to 291.7 billion JPY, but the monthly result was down 26.6% compared to the same month of 2019.

Sales in domestic travel were down 9.0% year on year or down 19.4% over 2019 to 176.6 billion JPY. Sales in overseas travel were up 33.6% year on year to 100 billion JPY, but the result was still down 37.3% compared to June 2019.

Sales in inbound travel were down 0.5% year on year to15.1 billion JPY.

In comparison with June 2023, sales in domestic package tours reduced by 18.2% to 44.9 billion JPY with 1,229,971 customers (down 22.6%). Sales in overseas package tours were up 89.2%  year on year to 10.2 billion JPY with 26,301 customers (up 73.2%), but compared to June 2019, sales and customers were still largely down 68.0% and 78.6% respectively.  After the pandemic, a trend to shift from group travel to FIT seemed to be strong.

The top was JTB Group with sales of 103 billion JPY (down 24.5% over 2019), followed by KNT-CT Holdings with 29.1billion JPY (down 30.8%),  Hankyu with 28.6 billion JPY (down 12.5%), NTA with 27 billion JPY (down 23.9%) and HIS with 25 billion JPY (down 30.7%).
