Visa announced that transactions on Visa cards by Korean travelers accounted for 62% in Asia Pacific, followed by 22% in Europe and 13% in United States, based on the data for the first six months of 2024.. The top country in terms of spending was Japan, followed by Vietnam, Australia, Thailand and Guam.
The ratio of spendings on Visa cards in Japan increased from 39% of the total to 48%. By category for payment with Visa card, the top was department stores at 30%, followed by 14% in discounted stores and 10% in clothing and accessory shops.
The tops, for instance, were accommodation in Vietnam and foods and medical goods in Australia.
Although the spread of "touch payment" is slower in Asia than in Europe, it has increased from 11% to 29% in Japan. The company analyzes that the reason for this is that more users have experienced touch payment overseas, realized its convenience, and started using it domestically. Another notable feature is that the usage rate of "open loop," which allows public transportation to be used by tapping a credit card, exceeds 90% in Thailand, Australia, and the UK.
